Welcome to Firwood High School

Head’s Welcome

My name is Helen Addinall and I am the Head of School at Firwood. I have pleasure in extending the warmest welcome to a very special place.

Firwood High School is part of the Woodbridge Trust which also includes Ladywood School, Ladywood Outreach Service and Woodbridge College. Firwood is a specialist school providing highly expert education for students with a wide range of complex special educational needs and disabilities, from ages 11-19.

It is a privilege to lead Firwood School; our experienced and dedicated staff team, who are highly valued, consistently provide quality provision and learning experiences for our students. The school is committed to providing a relevant education for our pupils and preparing them for future opportunities. This is within the context of our state-of-the-art building which is co-located with Bolton St Catherine’s Academy.

Firwood prides itself in being an inclusive school which ensures that all of our pupils receive an equal opportunity to achieve their very best. The school respects differences and celebrates diversity in all its forms. It gives our students a voice and encourages active participation in the education process.

Our students remain at the heart of every decision we make to ensure that they are happy, safe and confident and that the opportunities we offer are matched to their needs. Here at Firwood High School we believe that education succeeds in close partnership between home and school. We therefore place a great deal of emphasis on our partnership with parents and carers.

Please feel free to contact me for any further information about the school or if you are interested in a visit. A very warm welcome awaits.

Head of School

Firwood is Bolton’s provision for students aged 11 – 19 years with severe and profound learning difficulties. The school caters for a range of pupils including those with severe learning difficulties (SLD), profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) and autism.

The school is purpose built and we are co-located with Bolton St Catherine’s Academy. This allows pupils to access inclusion opportunities, where appropriate, also mix with their mainstream peers during lunchtimes.

During the year we have opportunities for parents to come into school to discuss their child’s progress. Whilst this happens during the school year we are happy for you to contact us at any time to discuss your child. We operate a Home/School dairy system in school and use this very effectively to communicate with parents.
